Optical pachymetry
WebJan 31, 2024 · Optical pachymetry: Optical pachymeters are mounted on a biomicroscope mostly used by ophthalmologists called slit lamps. The optical pachymeter does not come in contact with the cornea, unlike the ultrasound pachymeters that need to come in contact with cornea before the measurement is taken. WebSep 25, 2009 · Pachymetry is an important part of the evaluation and management of ocular hypertension and glaucoma. Several techniques are available to reliably and reproducibly measure corneal thickness. The methodologies used in these techniques are based on either ultrasonic or optical principles.

WebUltrasound pachymetry is precise, easy to use, and relatively inexpensive. Traditionally, optical pachymetry had been performed using the Haag-Streit pachymeter, whose measurements are reported to be less reproducible and less reliable than the ultrasound pachymeter 43. WebUltrasound pachymetry (US pachymetry) is a contact method for measuring CCT and is perhaps the most commonly used method. However, non-contact methods like scanning slit topography (Orbscan II), slit-lamp optical coherence tomography (SL-OCT), and specular microscopy are also used.

WebPachymetry is usually done by using ultrasonography. For ultrasound pachymetry, the eye is numbed with drops, and an ultrasound probe is placed gently onto the surface of the cornea. Optical pachymetry does not require numbing eye drops because the instruments do not touch the eye.
