I tried specifying generator using: cmake -G "MinGW Makefiles" .. but got errors: CMake Error: CMake was unable to find a build program corresponding to "MinGW Makefiles".

However, you can use .exe from WSL2, so if you're aiming at s cross platform project you can always compiler it with gcc on WSL for Linux or use mingw or MSVC for Windows. Both are decent. But i will recommend to get rid of both and use WSL-2.
