Iron storage hepatocytes
WebOct 25, 2024 · Major iron-exporting cells include macrophages, which recycle heme-derived iron from senescent RBCs; hepatocytes, which are the major site of iron storage; and intestinal enterocytes, which facilitate dietary intake of iron. However, most cells are able to export iron through FPN1 and, thus, are potential hepcidin targets. WebJul 1, 2015 · To maintain iron homeostasis, the organism controls the dietary iron absorption by enterocytes, its recycling by macrophages and storage in hepatocytes. These processes are mainly controlled by hepcidin, a liver-derived hormone which synthesis is regulated by iron levels, inflammation, infection, anemia and erythropoiesis.

WebSep 20, 2024 · In the last decade, accumulating evidence regarding molecules regulating iron metabolism or iron-related cell death programmes such as ferroptosis has shed light on the relationship between hepatic iron accumulation and hepatocarcinogenesis. In this review, we briefly present the current molecular understanding of iron regulation in the liver. WebIts job is to release iron from storage (from macrophages, hepatocytes and enterocytes) and move iron among your body’s cells. Ferroportin transports iron from your small intestine to your bloodstream so your body can use it. Hepcidin binds to ferroportin, causing it to break down. When this happens, the iron that ferroportin would’ve moved ...
