WebI was thinking about my S&W 586 today, and was reminded of the little flame cutting mark on the top strap. More specifically I was thinking about how many rounds the revolver has seen to get its mark there. When do you consider one "unsafe" for regular operation? WebMar 11, 2010 · I've assumed that flame cutting is pretty much a fact of life. I've only experienced it with a single round -- 125 gr. .357 magnum. Firing that round has left a noticeable cut mark in the top strap of my 686 (stainless) and my Model 27 (blued). Firing 158 grain magnums does not seem to produce the same effect.

In my experience, you only get any real flame cutting with hotter rounds like .357 magnum. You'd have to be firing some really hot .38s to ever cause much damage to the top strap. With magnums, it might cut a bit but stop once it hits a certain depth. More of an issue with alloy-framed guns.
