Scouring uses alkali to remove oils, fats and waxes to improve the absorbency whereas bleaching uses oxidising agents to improve the whiteness of the fabric. WebWashing the fabric first with water and then with dilute acid and sodium bisulfate to remove last traces of chlorine and alkali follows bleaching. In the next step, the fabric is soaped, washed, and treated with optical whitening agent to improve whiteness of fabric. This operation contributes about 10-20% of the total pollution load.
